Article: Sustainable Material Choices

Sustainable Material Choices
At Porter Blue, we understand in today’s world, sustainability is a trendy word that
many fast fashion brands have used to greenwash their products. We want to be transparent in all we do. Below you'll find information about the materials we use to craft our products.
GOTS CERTIFIED ORGANIC COTTON
The Global Organic Textile Standard is the most scrupulous certification of organic cotton. It
certifies the cotton is grown without GMOs or chemicals and with traceability from cotton fields to the final customer. It also goes further, by guaranteeing that GOTS-certified finished
products have been manufactured—at all stages of production—without any toxic products.
CANDIANI DENIM
The Candiani Denim Mill is the greenest textile company in the denim industry. Based between
Milan and the Alps, the mill is situated within a nature reserve in Ticino Park, Italy. It produces
some of the world’s finest and most sustainable denim fabric.
ORTA
Our over-dyed collection pieces are sourced from ORTA. Based in Turkey. ORTA uses premium
clay eco-coating technology on their organic denim fabric. You can learn more about this
process here.
UPCYCLED FABRIC
We use rolls of fabric that larger premium fashion brands have left behind and save them from the landfill. By rescuing these deadstock fabrics, we save resources both by limiting our
demand of new fabric and saving deadstock fabric from waste.
RECYCLED METAL HARDWARE
All of our metal parts—buttons, zippers, and rivets—are made with Post-Consumer Recycled
Hardware. This metal comes from products that have reached their end state. The metal is
removed from the garment or item, melted and re-issued as the button on your new jeans.
VEGAN
We use no animal products. All of our denim is—and always will be—cruelty free.
HIGH FIXATION DYES
We use high fixation reactive dyes. This means our dyes have a fixation rate of 85% and higher. This significantly reduces the deposition of dyes on the surfaces, which reduces the number of rinsing and soaping steps needed, compared to traditional dyes. In addition, our dyes are plant-based and non-synthetic, with 80% less sulphates than traditional dyes.
REPURPOSED SCRAP FABRIC
Once a pattern is cut out of the marker, there is a large amount of waste fabric left over.
Traditionally, factories have thrown these scraps to waste side or burnt them. We saw this as
an opportunity to use these scraps for new, inspired products. Instead of throwing away our
scraps, we have our factory partners keep them to create other up-cycled products, such as
our Scrapwork Tote Bag.
